BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL & LINKS WITH ST THOMAS’ CHURCH
St Thomas’s School is the second-oldest established school in Stockport, only Stockport Grammar School having a longer history. The original St Thomas’s was established in 1837, following the consecration of St Thomas’s Church in 1825. The building was large and gloomy, and few photographs survive. It held up to 1300 children at one point in time. Logbooks and registers from this period have survived and are examined from time to time, by the children or by members of the community.
The new building was opened in November 1967, following a short period when children had to be "bussed" to Heaton Chapel. We celebrated our 30th birthday with a special Founder’s Day service led by the Bishop of Stockport in November 1997.
The previous school had actually been Voluntary Aided, but the present school is Voluntary Controlled. This change of governance came about because the Church felt unable to commit the amount of money needed to build the new school. Therefore, in our particular case the Church own the land, and the fabric of the building is owned by the LEA.
