Mathematics
Mathematics at St Thomas'
At St Thomas', our aims are to ensure that every child:
- Develops fluency and can make connections between mathematical ideas
- Can reason using a range of mathematical language
- Has a love of maths and will challenge themselves
- Is a resilient mathematician
We teach the National Curriculum programmes of study through a mastery approach using Oak National Academy across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
At our school, we are passionate about helping children develop a deep understanding of mathematics from the very start of their learning journey. In the Early Years Foundation Stage, our Nursery children follow Master the Curriculum resources, which introduce key mathematical concepts through engaging and practical activities. In Reception, we build on these foundations using the Mastering Number programme, supporting pupils to develop strong number sense and confidence with early calculations.
As children move into Key Stage 1, they continue to strengthen their fluency by taking part in Mastering Number sessions for 15 minutes, four times a week. These short, focused sessions ensure pupils develop quick recall of number facts and secure mental strategies. Alongside this, we use Oak Academy resources to plan our maths lessons, providing children with carefully structured opportunities to reason mathematically, solve problems and apply their knowledge in different contexts.
In Key Stage 2, the Mastering Number programme continues in Year 3, and this year we are also extending it into Years 4 and 5. This helps pupils secure the essential skills they need for more advanced mathematical thinking. Additionally, children across Key Stage 2 take part in Times Tables Rock Stars, both in school and at home, which gives them fun and engaging ways to practise and improve their multiplication and division fluency—an essential skill for success in maths
