Physical Education at St. Thomas’

At St. Thomas’, we aim to promote happy, healthy and active lifestyles. Physical Education and sport is embedded into our curriculum and school life throughout the year. We believe that Physical Education and healthy living promotes qualities such as enjoyment, perseverance, enthusiasm, tolerance and reliability.

All children at St. Thomas’ have two sessions of curriculum Physical Education and sport each week, and these are taught by a combination of school staff and specialist sport coaches. These sessions involve a range of dance, gymnastics, ball and team skills/games. At St. Thomas’, Physical Education is delivered in a safe, supportive and progressive learning environment. We follow a scheme of work called GetSet4PE, which ensures continuity and development with key knowledge and skills and also exposes the children to a wide range of sporting activities, including yoga, orienteering, hockey, basketball, rounders and golf. Pupils in Year 5 also go swimming once a week as part of the National Curriculum.

At St. Thomas’, children are also given the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extra curricular and competitive sporting activities during lunchtimes and after school. Sports coaches and play leaders ensure children are given opportunities to be active whilst developing skills, improving their fitness and having fun.
